Abbot Peter and the monks of the Benedictine monastery of Mariastein welcome you cordially
Since 1636, guests from all over the world have been visiting the Benedictine monastery of Mariastein, the most famous place of pilgrimage in northwest Switzerland.
The heart of the monastery is the Shrine. 59 steps lead into the underground grotto with the smiling Madonna. Here, in complete seclusion, pilgrims from all over the world find peace and space, silence and security for the inner monologue and for the intense dialogue with the Holy Mother of God. The Mother of Consolation of Mariastein gives shelter and comfort, she gives energy and courage - her unique power rests on the legend of «Mary in the rock».
