Construction work on the pilgrims’ car park has begun
On September 2nd, 2024, the Benedictines of Mariastein, along with monastery guests, the core team for the area design, and contractors from Ernst Frei AG Kaiseraugst—Oliver Felber, Petrit Muqai, and Patrick Winkler—marked the start of construction work with a small blessing ceremony.
The first phase of the Mariastein site redesign will focus on redeveloping the large car park at the village entrance. Approximately 40 new parking spaces will be created to the south, along with additional green spaces, trees, and discreet lighting. The pilgrim car park will be managed, with a parking fee of CHF 1.50, matching the current fee charged by the municipality of Metzerlen-Mariastein at Klosterplatz. A special rate will apply for long-term and permanent users.
The car park at Klosterplatz will be closed during 2025. Additionally, a new, barrier-free public transport stop, ‘Mariastein-Kloster,’ at the Flüh-/Metzerlenstrasse turn-off will be operational by the mid-December 2024 timetable change, accommodating articulated buses. The stop at Klosterplatz will be permanently closed.
