Festive music by Johann Sebastian Bach and others.

As organist in Mühlhausen in Thuringia in 1708, it fell to none other than the twenty-two-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach to compose the festive music for the change of councillors. The cantata ‘Gott ist mein König’ is an early masterpiece by the future Thomaskantor and was to remain the only large-scale church music to be printed until the end of his life. Here, the young Bach already reveals himself to be a master of instrumentation: in addition to the trumpets, which were indispensable for festive occasions, recorders and the then modern ‘French’ oboes complement the string ensemble. French influences are also evident in the festive music by Philipp Heinrich Erlebach and Georg Muffat, which complements this splendid programme.
