Radiant sounds against the darkness with music by Haydn/Gottwald, Ligeti, Oña, Brahms, Schumann and others.
Basler Madrigalisten | Raphael Immoos, Musical Director
The Basler Madrigalisten’s concert brightens the shorter autumn days, bringing musical light into our hearts. The concert’s title refers to Haydn’s Creation, whose introduction has been transformed by Clytus Gottwald into a resonant work for a cappella choir. György Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna, a masterpiece of a cappella composition, creates a mesmerizing, floating soundscape that also inspired Stanley Kubrick, who used it in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It represents eternal light as an infinite auditory experience. Erik Oña’s Rem Aeternam, a 2014 commission from the late composer, similarly revolves around the delicate merging of voices. The program is rounded out with Johannes Brahms’s famous motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben? and Robert Schumann’s two pieces for double choir, Ungewisses Licht and An die Sterne.
