New approach to pilgrimage

Mariastein has been a place of pilgrimage since the 14th century, and its appeal and charisma are still as strong as ever, transcending all borders. Around 250,000 people from both sides of the border, from all walks of life and with different languages and cultures, come to Mariastein every year. But the signs of social change are also visible here.

Recognising the signs of the times therefore means:

  • Review the previous offers of the pilgrimage
  • Develop new programmes, for example for people with a migration background, for those not affiliated with any religion, and for religious and spiritual seekers.

The pilgrimage is to be reorganised with a view to the development of the monastic community and the 2026 anniversary of100 years of the coronation of the miraculous image and the elevation of the monastery church to a papal “Basilica minor”’.
