Today, the entire responsibility for the monastery and pilgrimage rests on the 13 Benedictine monks. More than half of them are over 80 years old. Around 25 employees (15 full-time positions) work within the monastery, in the pilgrimage, in the guest house and in the monastery store. The monastery’s own farm is leased out.
The Mariastein Monastery is a public corporation under the old law of the Canton of Solothurn.
The term ‘old law’ refers to the fact that the Mariastein Monastery was already a separate legal entity before the Swiss Civil Code came into force in 1912.
Furthermore, a Catholic Monastery is subject to the canonical law of the Roman Catholic Church of 1983. The religious institutes are regulated in the canons 573-709 of the canon law. In addition, there is the Rule of St. Benedict (6th century) and the own law of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation (since 1986). Internal monastic regulations complete the set of rules.
Ziele der neuen Trägerschaft:
Neu beruht die Trägerschaft von Mariastein auf drei Säulen:
1. Verein Benediktinerkloster Mariastein
Rechtssphäre für Konventualen des Klosters. Gegründet am 14. August 2024. Vorstand Peter von Sury (Präsident), Armin Russi, Martin M. Planzer, Ludwig Ziegerer.
2. Mariastein Betriebs AG
Fusion der drei klostereigenen Aktiengesellschaft: Hofgut Mariastein AG, Beneficientia AG und Hotel Restaurant Post AG. Bündelung der wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten. Verwaltungsrat: Johann Rudolf Meier, Theo Seckinger, Abt Peter von Sury, Susanne Winkler, Thomas Ziegler (Präsident); Geschäftsführer: Florian Dolder. Realisiert am 01. Juni 2024.
Die klostereigenen Hotel- und Restaurantbetriebe Kreuz und Post sowie der Gästebereich des Klosters werden von der BeRest AG, Basel, geführt.
3. Verein Pilgerstätte Mariastein
In Zukunft soll ein Verein für die Wallfahrt organisatorisch, personell und finanziell zuständig sein. Die Umsetzung dieses Postulates ist in Arbeit.
