The Basilica

The Monastery complex is dominated by the Monastery and pilgrimage church, built on the orders of Abbot Fintan Kieffer and consecrated by the Bishop of Basel, Johann Franziskus von Schönau, on 31 October 1655
.

The Monastery church has held the honorary papal title of Basilica minor since 1926.

Originally built in the late Gothic style, the interior was redesigned several times and between 1900 and 1934 it was furnished and painted in the neo-Baroque style.

The magnificent high altar at the end of the choir, a gift from the French King Louis XIV, was consecrated in 1680.

The monks hold their five to six prayer services in the Basilica’s choir every day.

All the major services also take place in the Basilica, especially on Sundays and public holidays, when many pilgrims gather to celebrate the Eucharist and Vespers with the monks.

Special sights inside the basilica are:

  • The Organs
  • Paintings on the central nave walls and ceiling
  • Aisles and side walls
  • baroque pulpit
  • Choir grille
  • High altar

There are also memorabilia of our saints in the basilica. You can find out more at>> here.
