Compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Pater Leo Stöcklin, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and others.
The organists of Mariastein Abbey are celebrating the successful overhaul of the Mariastein organs with a special concert, during which both the choir organ and the great organ of the basilica will be showcased in a new light. The programme opens with works by Johann Sebastian Bach and progresses into the early 19th century. Pieces by Father Leo Stöcklin, a Mariastein abbot, organist, and composer, along with works by his contemporaries, offer a glimpse into the monastic musical tradition at the time of the construction of the original large organ. This instrument, which served as a model for the newly built organ in 1978, is housed in the historic building. Additionally, the choir organ, built by Roman Steiner in 2001, will be heard in dialogue with its ‘big sister.’ Mariastein Monastery organists Christoph Anzböck, Josef Laming, and Bernhard Müller will perform on these instruments.
