Organ music for the first Advent

Sunday, November 29, 2026, 4 p.m.

Josef Laming, Tobias Lindner

In Catholic tradition, Advent is considered a “marked time” – a kind of Lent before Christmas. During this time of the church year, in which it gets darker and darker until the sun turns its course at Christmas, composers and poets have always interwoven impressive melodies and texts rich in imagery. The melodies of the old Advent chorales are so deeply anchored in the collective memory that no one can escape their effect – even people without close ties to the church carry them in their subconscious. To this day, these chorales inspire numerous composers to create new works. The program spans an ecumenical arc over various epochs. The organists Josef Laming and Tobias Lindner bring both organs of the basilica to life – a sonorous Advent awakening that leads into the quiet time.
